Cleaning out water for daily consumption involves the process of filtration, called Water Filtration. As process in itself, water filtration, has several types all of which differ on the method used, the materials needed and the duration of the process. These types of water filtration are the following: Ultraviolet Radiation, Reverse Osmosis, Ultra Filtration, Carbon Absorption, Distillation and Ion Exchange. Ultraviolet Radiation - this method of water filtration is said to be superior amongst all other methods as ultraviolet radiation has the capability of destroying all types of bacteria. It disinfects water without the use of chemicals which might alter the composition of water. The use of Ultraviolet radiation yields drinking water that is germ free, which can be used in homes, institutions and companies. Often times what used when using UV radiation is a mercury lamp with 254nm UV light. Reverse Osmosis - as the name suggest is the counterpart of the natural osmosis process. It works by containing solid substances and letting the liquid pass through. This process has been used by many institutions when filtering water for municipal treatment plants. There are many contaminants that the reverse osmosis technology can remove such as zinc, radium, selium, tannin, sulfate, sodium, magnesium, parasites, nitrates and nitrites, copper, the taste and odor of chlorine, asbestos, copper and many more. Ultra Filtration - is a medical process of removing substances from the body of the patients. But the process and the concept is being applied in the filtration of water. It is a technique of membrane separation in which tiny particles and suspended matter are filtered letting the purified water to go through. Carbon Absorption - as a method of water filtration it only works on absorbing unpleasant smells, tastes, chlorine, gases and other chemicals in the water that passed through a carbon filter. It does not remove solid articles such as dirt, metals or wastes on the water per say. When this process is done, the water would have to go through another type of water filtration to get rid of the contaminants it might have. Distillation - is one of the oldest methods of purifying water. The water to be purified is heated to a boiling point where it vaporizes. The vapor would then be condensed and stored after being distilled. It removes nearly all impurities from the water including organic compounds such as heavy metals, chlorine, chloramines and radionucleides. If done successfully, it inactivates bacteria, viruses and cysts. Ion Exchange - involves the use of a tank with small beads of synthetic resins. It acts to exchange ions with the ones in the water. Its main purpose is to actually treat water and to remove scale-forming calcium from the water. Works well with other filtration process such as carbon absorption.
